Audrey Gibson, Street Photographer, May 1942
Street photographers took photos of people on the street and handed them a receipt that they could take to the photographer’s studio and buy their photo. This was especially popular during the war because camera film was difficult to come by, making street photographers one of the few ways to get snapshots of family and friends.
These photographers were fixtures on busy commercial streets like Granville and Hastings, but the same method was also used to generate thousands of photos of the Hollow Tree in Stanley Park.
Vancouver’s best known and last street photographer was Foncie Pulice, who began in 1934 as a way to meet girls and continued right up until his retirement in 1979. There is a facebook page dedicated to Foncie and other local street photographers where you can share their work if you happen to have any.
