Dark Town Fire Brigade, 1888
Photograph shows the Hastings Sawmill Volunteer Firemen Perfomance Troupe on the old Hastings Road. The first fire engine on Burrard Inlet is partially shown at the end of the troupe.
“Dark Town and “Dark Town Fire Brigade” were common racist motifs in the minstrel/blackface tradition of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
