Colonial Theatre, 1957
Originally built in 1888 as the Van Horne building, this building at the southwest corner of Granville and Dunsmuir underwent a major renovation and reopened as the Kinemacolor Theatre in 1913 (which used special filters to show films in colour!) In 1915 it became the Colonial Theatre and for many years housed one of Con Jones’s billiard rooms/tobacco shops under his signature “Don’t Argue” banner. It was demolished in 1972 to make room for the Pacific Centre mall. For more, see Changing Vancouver.
