Nijinsky in Vancouver, Monday 15 January 1917
Legendary dancer Vaslav Nijinsky directed and performed in this Ballet Russe production at the Vancouver Opera House (The second one; located at Gore & Hastings, it was later called the Empress Theatre).
Nijinsky danced La Princess Enchantée with Lydia Lopokova. Referencing Nijinsky’s 1912 L’après-midi d’un faune, the Sun’s reviewer wrote: “We do not see Nijinsky in the classical Faun pose, but as a superb master of the more conventional art of the ballet, transfiguring it into something vast and Russian and individual.”
